Thank you to all those who participated in ICA 2010 delegates, presenters, chairpersons, exhibitors and sponsors. With over 1,500 delegates, 373 Accompanying Persons and 103 countries represented, ICA 2010 was truly an international and very well-attended event. Thank you for being part of it. We hope that those that attended enjoyed the event and that your professional and personal objectives were achieved.

The African sun showed visitors a lovely warm time in Cape Town, offering perfect weather for the social programme events. From the outdoor Welcome Reception at the Western Cape Premier's residence, the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain at the Gala Dinner set in the Castle of Good Hope to the varied afternoon social excursions and day trips, delegates and accompanying persons were treated to wonderful Cape weather as they experienced the best that Cape Town and the Western Cape have to offer.

The Scientific Programme included 98 sessions over 5 days with well over 250 speakers from 35 countries. We received more than 190 abstracts in the Call for Papers and 114 papers were given at the congress, the balance comprising presentations and panels. All in all there were more than 300 programme contributors (papers, presentations, panels, plenaries, chairs), each contributing to the success of the congress. Exciting and engaging addresses were delivered from renowned keynote speakers including Paul Embrechts, Pravin Gordhan, Yoshihiro Kawai, Mamphela Ramphele, Enrique Ruelas and Helen Zille.

Thanks again to all that participated and we look forward to gathering again in 2014, in Washington D.C.

Social Responsibility Tour

Social Responsibility Tour
Participants teamed up with a local non-profit organization Ikamva Labantu to assist with home improvements desperately needed at a foster home run by a local mother in the Guguletu township. A few remarkable women (known as Magnificent Mothers) in the townships offer security and shelter to orphaned or vulnerable children and receive minimal government funding. Ikamva Labantu assists these mothers with feeding and schooling the children. The children are also regularly seen by Ikamva Labantus nutrisionist to ensure that they are healthy and well nourished.

Prior to the congress, building work was begun on a house which is home to 12 children ranging in age from 5 months to 17 years, whom Thobeka Mapapu has taken in and for whom she is caring. Thobeka has been doing this work for the past 7 years improving the lives of at least 30 children. By the Thursday afternoon of the ICA 2010 congress, the basic structure of the renovation was largely complete with many finishing touches required. Most of the delegates who attended this tour were involved in painting the primer coat in the rooms throughout the house. For the first time the children will have grass to play on in the front of the house instead of just a dusty patch. The delegates not only laid the grass but some of the braver stronger participants were involved in laying the paving of the patio which has had a roof built over it to provide the children with an outside shady area in which to play.

At the rear of the house was a building which had been partly burnt down and was very unsafe for the children and Thobeka. Some of the delegates got to release their frustration by knocking down the burnt walls creating a safer play area at the back of the house.

After as much work as time allowed, a sumptuous party was held for all the children and Thobeka to celebrate the building of their improved home. The renovations and improvements will make Thobeka's life a lot easier and allow the children a safer happier place to live.

A message from the Chairperson of the ICA 2010 Organising Committee

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The 29th International Congress of Actuaries is taking place in Cape Town in March 2010 and it is my pleasure to invite you to attend. As the Chairperson of the local Organising Committee, I can assure you that we are working hard to put together a stimulating scientific programme and an entertaining social programme. Our goal is to develop a congress that does justice to its setting - the gorgeous and cosmopolitan city of Cape Town.

This is the first time that the ICA will be held in Africa. We hope you will take advantage of this unique opportunity to see a beautiful part of the world and come to Cape Town to engage with your colleagues. We also hope that the variety of pre- and post-congress tours associated with the event will encourage you to bring your families and make a holiday of it.

We look forward to seeing you in 2010. Watch this space for developments.

Yours sincerely,

Desmond Smith
